King Gwanggaeto the Great Conqueror Drama ( ゜ρ゜)ノ∝━━∈

After watching an episode of “Gwanggaeto, The great conqueror”, don’t you ever feel like reading a summary/recap soon after?

You’re in the right place then. Thanks to the magic of Korean drama fanaticism, sutiben is writing up the synopsis as it airs… or as fast as suti’s tiny fingers can type. Check below but be careful of spoilers.

UPDATE: Woooah, a fan randomly said on Facebook they liked suti’s drama review. Made suti happy happy. Grazie T. Doh’ should’ve asked if could post comment here…

What else? Uhm… well suti loving this historical Asian drama! ‘Tis basically about the king of Goguryeo struggling to get his country back on the map against aggressive AND MEAN neighbors. But which of Goguryeo’s neighbors are the bads ones ( ?_?) : Houyan, Mohe, Wae, Khitan, Beiwei, Silla, or Baekje?

There’s punching, kicking, cart wheel, pulling of hair… oh wait, maybe no so much pulling. But there’s explosions! And Bongyi is here! hehe

Anyhoo, suti not know people like the recaps. So making this the new homepage for “Gwanggaeto, The Great Conqueror”. Looks a lil’ ugly but will try to make it nicer in the future.

Episode summary: Relive the drama

What you may be missing out

Uncover the big picture. Pickup what you missed or didn’t fully understand. Lots of hours went into writing the synopsis for each episode and many seem to enjoy reading them. Here’s what a few have said:

Eileen, F, USA, NY

Very informative

JJ, F, “Many countries from the East”

The use of words in the recap, the selection of photos, other historic information, and little things here and there have shown much of Suti’s passion for the drama, the three-kingdom partucular Goguryeo history and the writing itself. Suti has really been working hard. ***** ( five stars ) and a big pot of cookies for Suti.

\(゜▼゜*)/ Yatta! Hey, suti still waiting for cookies…

WarriorKing, M, USA

It was extremely well done. I liked the headings and sub heading format you used.

Suti was just having fun with the headers. Actually, didn’t think many people would notice. So suti happy. ^^

Angelic layer, F, USA

They are great!

TR, F, Singapore

I like reading your summaries. I’m very impressed by the headings and titles you use. How long do you take to think up such things? You also infuse humor and your feelings into the writeup and makes it a pleasure to read. 加油!

谢谢, TR! *whispers* Only because TR asked. Each piece take minimum 6 hours but heading no take too long. Just write first thing that come to head.

Sutiben’s infamous recap series

Anyhoo, hope you enjoy reading all the summaries below. Just click on the title and hopefully don’t get hooked ^_^ If you’re new, start with episode 55 and after. First few ones were rough ^^; What? Was first try.

Thoughts on Gwanggaeto Dae Wang

The Gwanggaeto series has wrapped up but what does everybody think about it? What were the good points? Where did the show fall? Where did sutiben even get the idea to write a summary of each episode? And the question everybody wants to know. Everybody. Who does suti really like? Find out in the drama review.

Infrequently Asked Questions

Not all are really frequently asked … but makes suti sound big. hehe

Why aren’t there any summaries for the first 50 episodes?
Sutiben started writing these summaries late into the series. The plan is to do the early eps overtime.
What does the name “Gwanggaeto” mean?
Great expander of the territory.
Does sutiben know where I can get an AUTHORIZED, copyrighted copy of the series for my home library? There are so many rip-off copies with lousy translations out there.
No worry, think found a place to get Gwanggaeto DVD. ‘Tis from KBS channel itself so think legit.
What ever happened to Dol Bisu?

Everybody seem to ask. The answer can be found in this episode where the Khitans make a side comment that they dealt with Dol Bi-Soo & the Goguryeo soldiers. After that, we never hear from him ever again. So either he locked up in a Khitan cage hitting prison bars with mug or he pass onto next world. And he was such a cool character too…

Sutiben also see the actor in another drama recently, so writers probably wrote off Kim Jung-Hyun’s character. None of this confirmed but think this best theory. If hear real reason, please let sutiben know.

Update: “Kim Jung Hyun who played the role of Dol Bisu has joined MBC daily drama, Dangerous Women as the lead actor, which is being aired since 10 October 2011.” So he was written off.

What ever happens to Gwanggaeto’s second wife?
A tragic love. Do they get back together? Does she marry Asin? If really wanna know, you’ll have to read this.
Where is this k-drama popular outside of Korea?

As far as can tell, Gwanggaeto Dae Wang most famous in US, Malaysia, Singapore & the Philippines. Least seems so.

But there lots of scattered fans from all over: Nigeria, Armenia, Romania, Iraq, Canada, Turkey, Hong Kong, Polan, UK, Germany, Brunel Darussalam, China, Saudi Arabia, India, Indonesia, Bulgaria, Ecuador, United Arab Emirates, Austria, France, Vietnam, Australia & Taiwan.

^^)/ *waves hand* hi hi all

Wasn’t the series supposed to last longer?

The show was originally supposed to reach 100 episodes but was cut a lil’ short and ultimately ended with 92. Read somewhere that it had to do with a budget cut but no 100% sure.

Actually, Mersing elaborates more on this

…It’s a pity the production ran out of budget, otherwise we’ll get to see Ko Un’s assassination, the last moments of Gwanggaeto (we got to see the ending of King Geunchogo), and Fengba’s ascension to the throne…

Looks like we missed lots of stuff in the last 8 episodes… maybe that’s explains why Fengba made a face at end.

The history behind Gwanggaeto-Taewang

Sutiben not know lots of historical facts before watch the drama. ‘Twas actually first time hearing of Damdeok and think more fun if you read this much later. Best not know and be surprised. Just friendly tip. A reason putting all this info on the bottom.

A deeper look into 광개토태왕

But if you insist, here’s a nice intro to start you off on Koguryeo history:

If you wanna know more about the real life of Emperor Damdeok, the wiki page probably best place sutiben can find online. (At least in English) Suti searched and searched.

But if no wanna read. sutiben also find youtube videos showing a special KBS historical program. It broadcasted on June 9, 2011, before the drama came out. The bad thing is only first 4 episodes subtitled in English and part 8 missing. Think you can make out most of it. Sorry, ‘tis only working videos suti find.

Anyway, putting it here in case you wanna watch. Suti liked it if that makes a difference.

There’s also another different documentary series but ‘tis all in Korean. Keeping it here for when sutiben’s Korean get better ^^

What else do you need to know? Oh yeah, China & Korea are fighting with words over which country does Goguryeo history belong to. *looks at floor* As can see, suti no so smart. Fail history. No really no know much about this. Let’s just say it belongs to sutiben until issue settled ^_^

Huh? What’s the Gwanggaeto Stele?

Do you remember that big and tall rock in the theme intro? That’s a real-life monument that has lots of writings on it.

The stele of Gwanggaeto the Great of Goguryeo was erected in 414 by Jangsu of Goguryeo as a memorial to his deceased father. It is one of the major primary sources extant for the history of Goguryeo

Wikipedia

Here’s how the Gwanggaeto Steele looks like today. A reminder of Goguryeo’s past.

It was found in northeast China in Ji’an but not everybody can agree on the translation.

As Goguryeo had occupied such a vast territory, there is a fierce on-going battle between Korea and China over who “owns” this heritage. Controversy began in 2002 when Chinese scholars started to claim that Goguryeo was, in fact, a tribute state to China. Korea, of course, asserts that it is the cultural descendent of the ancient people of Goguryeo…

Being inscribed with over 1800 chinese characters, the Chinese, of course, use the steele as evidence of the Chinese nature of the Goguryeo civilisation. The Japanese interprets one of the verses as stating that Japan had colonised ancient Korean kingdoms. As for the Koreans, they view the steele as a testament to their historical greatness and cultural advancement in antiquity —jerms
